Our Training Philosophy

The Mount Vernon Fire Department's training philosophy focuses on maintaining peak readiness among our firefighters and first responders. Every Monday, our team engages in varied sessions, from physically intense, hands-on exercises like rope rescue to classroom sessions on new technology. This comprehensive approach ensures our team is always prepared, enhancing both individual performance and unit cohesion to safeguard our community effectively.

Live Burn Training

Live burn training is crucial for our firefighters as it allows them to practice in one of the most stressful environments they may face. These sessions provide invaluable opportunities to hone their skills in a controlled, yet realistic setting, enhancing both individual performance and overall department readiness. This not only benefits our team but also the community, as it ensures we are well-prepared for real emergencies. If you own a home, store, or any structure facing total demolition, please contact us—we would greatly appreciate the opportunity to use this space for our training.

Ropes, Rescue, and Everything In between

Mount Vernon is deeply involved in rope rescue, thanks to our skilled personnel. We are fortunate to have members active in Iowa's Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR), individuals with ropes and climbing experience, and certified technical rescue experts. These professionals share their lifesaving knowledge with the rest of our team, significantly enhancing our rescue capabilities and preparedness for complex rescue operations.
